At least two countries in the region have launched trial HD services offering coverage of the football World Cup. In Slovenia, the countrys leading ISP Siol, which is owned by the incumbent telco Telekom Slovenije, has spent SIT50 million (208,800) on acquiring exclusive HD rights for the event. It is now being screened in 42 public places equipped with HD reception equipment.
Meanwhile in Poland, the national commercial station Polsat has begun a HD trial in conjunction with Echostar, Evertz, Leitch, Samsung Electronics, Sony and Tandberg. Taking place on four days of the month-long football competition, it could pave the way for the introduction of HD services on the digital DTH platform Cyfrowy Polsat.
